Optimization of Friction Drilling Process by Response Surface Methodology
Friction drilling is the process of producing hole in the sheet metal and hollow sections. Rotating conical tool is used to produce friction between tool and workpiece results in the formation of bushing around the hole. Different speed, feed and material thickness are used in the evaluation of the bushing height and bushing thickness. Coordinate measuring machine (CMM) is used to measure dimensions of the bushing height and width. The main objective of the experimentation is to optimize speed and feed to maximize bushing height and thickness for different material thicknesses (up to 2 mm). Furthermore, response surface methodology (RSM) technique is used for the optimization of speed and feed for different material thicknesses. It is found that as spindle speed of rotating tool increases, gradual increment in the bushing height and decrease in the bushing width.
