Abstract

This chapter’s contribution to the literature on service learning in Japan is focusing on its application in the field of disaster relief and environmental protection. The idea of using service learning to manage social trends has been studied quite extensively in current literature on service learning in Japan but using service learning for creating awareness in other areas like environmental conservation and disaster relief is somewhat neglected or under-studied in the existing literature. This writing is interested to pursue this line of enquiry to understand how Japan, which is well-known for its environmental management and sustainable development as well as natural disasters coping mechanism, has integrated environmental volunteerism and awareness as well as disaster relief work into its service learning curriculum.
