Effect of the Addition of Nanosized Y2O3 on the Mechanical Properties of WC-Bronze Composites
Abstract
Nano-Y2O3 reinforced WC-bronze composites were prepared by hot-press sintering process. The properties of the composites were dependent on the content of nano-Y2O3. The experimental data showed that as the content of nano-Y2O3 increases, the bending strength and tensile strength of the composites increase first and then decrease, with the maximum bending strength and tensile strength of 941 and 340 MPa, respectively, at the addition of 1.5 wt% nano-Y2O3. The enhancement of WC-bronze mechanical properties can be attributed to grain refinement and dislocation strengthening effect. When the content of nano-Y2O3 exceeds 1.5 wt%, the fracture mode changes from ductile fracture to brittle fracture because of nano-Y2O3 agglomeration, resulting in a decrease in strength.
