Mourning Love: Queer Performativity and Transformation in Zero Chou’s Spider Lilies and Splendid Float

Abstract

This chapter investigates gay and lesbian performativity, (individual and communal) mourning and transformation in Zero Chou’s Spider Lilies (2007) and Splendid Float (2004). Chou shows us the close relation between the loss of love object, the destabilization of self-identity, and the needs for mourning that mark Taiwanese gay and lesbian collective imagination. On the divide between straight/gay, life/death, and mourning/melancholia, the protagonists enact queer performativity to transform their own shame and grief: Little Green as Po in Spider Lilies reconciles with the inner child of her past, thus re-affirming her lesbian identity; Ai-wei/Rose as a Taoist shaman in Splendid Float, and his drag queen friends incorporate kinship, Western drag queen show and Taoist funeral ceremony to empower the gay community.
