Mobile-Based Attendance Monitoring Using GPS and Network Provider Location

Research has shown that attendance of students for lectures, tutorials, and practicals has a direct impact on their performance. As such proper monitoring of attendance provides an incentive for students to be present for their classes. In this work, we aim at designing and implementing a mobile-based attendance monitoring system and will make this process transparent and ubiquitous. The system makes use of both GPS and network provider localization information so as to balance between accuracy and power usage. The Mobile App is authenticated using fingerprint and allows automatic attendance monitoring if the app is open. All the information is stored in a NO-SQL database Firebase, on the cloud, and retrieved for statistical analysis. The results of this work show the enhanced features in terms of localization and authentication compared to existing works and also in terms of the execution time of the different features to provide a seamless user experience while using the system.
