Abstract

A diversion tunnel was designed as a part of Sengulam Augmentation Scheme to increase the storage in an already existing reservoir at Sengulam, by transferring water available at Kallar River Basin. Adverse problems encountered during tunnelling caused a delay in the progress of the construction work. Completely weathered zones and four sets of shear zones are the geological adversities present in the rock mass that caused different types of failure during driving of the tunnel. The present paper deals with the problem analysis and geotechnical study of the tunnel and suggestion of suitable preventive measure for tunnel collapse.
