Exploring a New Pattern of Translation Curriculum: A Learner-Centered FIST Program

Abstract

In order to meet the needs of the students as well as the market demand, a new pattern of translation curriculum called FIST (Fudan Intensive Summer Teaching) came into being. Two courses The Making of a Translator (in winter holiday) and Frontiers in Translation Studies (in summer holiday) were explored at Fudan University. The main features of courses are as follows: (1) the course focuses on a fixed topic or theme and finishes within 7–10 days; (2) students may take the course free of charge; (3) credits can be transferred; (4) teachers are international experts in translation studies from other universities, only one teacher at Fudan University serving as a coordinator; (5) students are selected regardless of their majors, universities, and translation background; and (6) the courses are learner-centered, conducted in the form of “lecture plus discussion” or “lecture plus practice.” This paper will introduce the course The Making of a Translator, which has received encouraging feedback from the students. Therefore, it may serve as an example for future translation curriculum design.
