Chapter

Abstract

In this chapter the basic issues pertaining to consciousness and cognition as expounded in the original sources of Vaiśeṣika will be discussed. In Vaiśeṣika view, the self is held to be the substratum of consciousness and not conscious by nature; it is said to become conscious when involved in the process of cognition. Since both these concepts are interrelated, hence it is appropriate to examine them both in relation to each other.
