Integration of Sustainability Targets into the Product Creation Process of German Manufacturing Companies
To achieve a transformation towards sustainable value creation, the manufacturing sector needs to contribute by limiting the use of natural resources as well as harmful emissions without compromising financial stability of companies. One pivotal strategy in this context is to guarantee a sustainable product life cycle by prospective consideration of sustainability factors in product development. The definition, implementation and validation of sustainability targets in the design process is a necessary condition for that purpose. To gather insights how companies address this challenge can be considered as difficult. This article presents the result of an empirical study which gives a first basic understanding how selected German companies address sustainability targets and which methods and tools for validation are used. The study consists of an initial workshop and nine expert interviews conducted in 2016/2017. In the scope of the study, defined targets and their validation, involved organizational roles as well as trade-offs between targets are discussed. Furthermore, the authors elaborate on potentials for further research.
