Abstract

This chapter reflects on the ethnographic data generated by the fieldwork in India and China and brings to the forefront the point that precariousness and lack of skills characterizes the Indian workplace for contract labour—a state of affairs that clearly needs to be reformed. More specifically the field research is used to push the argument that in India labour regulations and labour enforcement agencies too are unable to raise labour standards on their own—rather it has been shown that only when collective bargaining efforts are given some agency, it leads to better labour standards. It is precisely in this balancing of worker and employer interests that China is able to fare better, ensuring a productive workforce.
