The objective of this book was to discuss why, when, and how medicine and healthcare became a business, drawing on the example of Japan during the first part of the twentieth century. In Japan, as was the case in Western countries, medicine and healthcare as market-based activities (paying/receiving payments to receive/provide care) were limited to niches until the mid-nineteenth century.
