Two Prophetic Voices

  • Leigh T. I. Penman

Two contrasting examples of the potential diversity of optimistic apocalyptic expectations are provided via case studies of the lives and works of the Torgau mathematician Paul Nagel and the itinerant metallurgist and technologist Wilhelm Eo Neuheuser. While Neuheuser anticipated a period of widespread political change before the Last Judgement, Nagel’s expectations were primarily spiritual in nature. Despite radical differences between their respective visions, both were motivated by a desire to posit order in the face of chaos, and elaborated apocalyptic visions subject directly to the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, and therefore impervious to critique by worldly theologians
