On the Excess of BM Transferrin Genotype in Sheep
Starch-gel electrophoresis described by Ashton (1965) was applied, with slight modifications (Fésüs, 1967a) to determine the transferrin types of 431 Hungarian Merino, 213 Hungarian Black Racka, 69 Hungarian White Racka, 255 Cigaja, 139 Karakul and 70 Ile de France sheep (Fésüs, 1967b). On the basis of the gene frequencies the expected numbers of the different transferrin types were determined and the differences between the expected and observed number of each transferrin type were also calculated.
In the first part of this study the electrophoretic differences between the Tf M and Tf D bands were not considered and all Tf BM and Tf BD animals were taken to be Tf BD. In five of the six breeds examined the number of the Tf BD types was higher than expected.
In the second part of the study the zone pairs controlled by the alleles TfM and TfD were considered separately. In five of the six breeds studied the number of the Tf BM type was higher than expected and these differences were significant at the 5% level in four breeds (Hungarian Merino, Hungarian Black Racka, Hungarian White Racka and Karakul).
