Leukocyte Antigens of Man and Subhuman Primates

  • H. Balner
Chapter

Abstract

Human leukocyte antigens have now been studied for some 10 years. During that period a relatively small number of investigators have defined the major antigens, proven that most of them belong to one genetic system (comparable to the H-2 locus of mice) and shown that they are of importance for histocompatibility (Histocompatibility Testing, 1965 and 1967). This last circumstance is probably the reason for the tremendous interest in leukocyte typing throughout the world: at present, matching for leukocyte antigens is the only practical method of histocompatibility testing for non-related human individuals. It should be emphasized in this context that, unlike in rodents, leukocyte or tissue antigens of primates are not recognizable on red bloodjcells and that the classical red cell blood groups are, except for the strong antigens of the human ABO system, probably not important for histocompatibility.
