Physicochemical and Immunological Basis of Immunoglobulin Heterogeneity

Abstract

The history of immunoglobulins is still relatively short, their definition was introduced only 31 years ago by Tiselius (1937), Tiselius and Kabat (1939). Peculiar characteristics of these proteins are: (a) antibody activity (b) they are the slowest migrating electrophoretic group of serum proteins, (c) extensive heterogeneity, (d) they are formed in plasmacytes and lymphoid cells.
