Protein Polymorphism of the Seminal Vesicles of Bulls and the Sensitivity of Bull Spermatozoa to Cold Shock

Abstract

Spermatozoa from the cauda epididymis and the spermatozoa from the ejaculate differ in a number of features. In addition to the commonly known difference in metabolic activity, they show a different sensitivity to a sudden decrease in temperature. Epididymal spermatozoa as noted by Lasley and Bogart (1944) are resistant to sudden cooling, whereas ejaculated spermatozoa show a considerable sensitivity (Milovanov 1940). In general, harmful changes produced by sudden cooling have been called cold shock, and a number of studies dealt with this subject (Mann 1954, Mann and Lutwak-Mann 1955, Blackshaw and Salisbury 1957).
