Congenital jejuno-ileal atresia and stenosis

In 1911 P. Fockens1 of Rotterdam reported the first successfully treated case of small bowel atresia. However, up to 1952 the mortality of atresia of the small bowel remained prohibitive even at the best paediatric surgical centres in the world, viz. 84% at the Children’s Medical Center in Boston2 and 88% at the Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond Street3 in London. Indeed, in a comprehensive review of the world’s literature up to 1950, Evans4 could find reports of only 39 cases of jejuno-ileal atresia that had been successfully treated.
