From time to time we stop to cast a glance at the road lying behind us. It is not unbecoming for a philosopher to indulge in this human propensity, although he will have to reflect whether he is justified in bothering other people with the outcome of such retrospective ponderings, since even if they are not merely anecdotal, they are more often of a subjectively autobiographical than of an objectively historical nature.
