Facts and Ideas on Succession in the Mediterranean Territory of Israel

Abstract

This review constitutes an attempt a reevaluation of the accepted ideas on plant succession in limestone areas of the Mediterranean territory of Israel. Limestone covers the greatest portion of this territory in Israel as well as extensive areas in other Near Eastern countries. The following ideas and suggestions are based on data acquired mostly during the last two decades in Israel but they should be applicable to neighbouring countries having similar climate and vegetation.
