Some Aspects on Super-Finish Machining of Ceramic Components for Engines
In this paper, an attempt is made to grind the advanced ceramic materials Sialon by common abrasive wheel through a large amount of experiments for super-finish grinding process. At first the influence of the technological parameters on surface roughness of the workpiece is analysed and grinding forces are measured. And then the method for grinding wheel field balancing in the case of disturbance is proposed and the effect of wheel balance on surface roughness of the workpiece is also researched. Finally the material removal mechanism during super-finish grinding process is studied via observing the micro-surface by SEM. It is indicated that the remove of ceramic materials is due to its plastic deformation to form the super-finish surface. The ground ceramic workpieces have been succesfully applied to the fields of heat engine, oildom and medicine.
