Formulating Principles

Abstract

Chapters elsewhere in these books have dealt in detail with the physical and chemical properties of the raw materials used in paint formulations. This chapter will indicate practical techniques used by the formulator in the selection of raw materials and their correct combination to develop a new product. With the vast and increasing number and complexity of raw materials suitable for use in paints, it is difficult to guide the reader in such a way as to make him or her an immediately competent paint formulator; paint formulating is a matter of experience, inspired guesswork and, above all, logical thought, coupled with a thorough knowledge of raw materials. The latter has been supplied, and experience is a product of time ; the logic of paint formulation is therefore the subject of this chapter.
