Activation of mouse peritoneal macrophages and of the alternative pathway of the complement system by cartilage specific collagen type II
Chronic inflammatory reactions are of considerable medical importance all over the world. Chronic inflammation is accompanied by tissue degradation and repair. The degradation is especially important in the connective tissues of joints, where loss of articular cartilage and bone results in the pain and deformity of rheumatoid arthritis. The fibrosis associated with repair is a major factor in the pathogenesis of cirrhosis and other conditions. It is also prominent in rheumatoid synovia, especially during the later stage of the disease.
