Future trends in anti-rheumatic drugs

The past few years have seen definite improvements in anti-inflammatory drugs. There are more compounds available. There are drugs which are much safer and better tolerated than the older anti-inflammatory drugs like aspirin. There are drugs which are much more convenient than aspirin, some of which can be taken as a single daily dose. There are drugs which act on some aspect of the disease process in rheumatoid arthritis and may alter the outcome of the disease. There are drugs for gout which make the management of this disease relatively easy and very successful. The future will certainly bring more drugs, although many will be similar to existing compounds. It would be good to see some different drugs. It would also be good to have treatments for osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis which were as effective as the current treatment of gout.
