Centrally-Administered Bombesin Delays Small Intestinal Transit but Stimulates Motility in the Rat

The concept of centrally-mediated effects on gastrointestinal motility has recently become established (1). Our laboratory has reported that bombesin, a neuropeptide localized in both the central nervous system and gastrointestinal tract of mammals (2,3), effectively reduces gastric emptying and small bowel transit after intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) administration to rats (4). Similarly, morphine and the opioid peptides produce dramatic slowing effects on gastrointestinal transit after central administration (5).
