The Relationship between Gastrointestinal Cyclic Motor Activity and Gallbladder Emptying in Humans

Abstract

During the last decade, the fasting motor pattern of the proximal digestive tract in normal subjects has been shown to consist of periods of quiescence, alternating with contractile motor activity. Recently published studies have demonstrated a marked increase in biliary secretion during the 30 min. period preceding the phase III activity in the duodenum. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationshipbetween the interdigestive gastrointestinal motility and the emtying pattern of the human gallbladder and to answer two questions: 1) Does the human gallbladder empty in the fasting state, and 2) if so, is the emtying related to a specific phase of the activity in the gastrointestinal tract.
