Small Intestinal Regulation of Gastric Emptying

Abstract

The rate of gastric emptying varies as a function of the gradient in pressure between the stomach and the duodenum and the resistance to outflow across the pylorus (1). When the gradient increases, gastric emptying speeds, providing the pyloric resistance remains constant. In contrast, when the gradient decreases and pyloric resistance remains unchanged, gastric empyting slows.
