In India large numbers of people are affected annually by river floods. This study discusses mobility of population in the Ghaghara floodplain, where the frequency of floods is high and their magnitude increasing. While permanent settlement, related to growing pressure on land, began there in the present century only, the density now exceeds 200 persons/sqkm. The authors suggest various measures to alleviate problems caused by floods.
