Is the Changed Responsibility Welcome? A Laboratorian’s View

Abstract

Decentralized testing is not new. There is ample evidence that decentralized testing takes place in intensive care units, coronary care units and special care baby units. Browning et al.1 published a survey of clinical chemistry equipment outside central laboratories and highlighted the problems faced with the ad hoc purchase of testing equipment outside the laboratory. These are a lack of recognition that the instrumentation requires day-to-day maintenance and servicing, that the instrumentation requires basic skills for its accurate operation, and that it also requires the application of quality control procedures.
