The Need for Decentralized Testing — A General Practitioner’s View

  • Paul Backer

The possibility of carrying out simple clinical tests and even more complex laboratory investigations in general practice has increased with changes in the organization of general practitioner services. For example the formation of multidisciplinary health centres or group practices with up to ten general practitioners encourages:
  • Greater professional contact between physicians with different interests including laboratory work;

  • Physicians to do more in general practice than single practitioners can do alone;

  • The establishment of better buildings and the pooling of resources; and

  • Regular participation in postgraduate education, research and teaching.
