Abstract

Mechanisms that controlled motion, such as clocks and automata, existed long before the industrial revolution. A good example is the Strasbourg clock, built in 1574 (Figure 3.1), which used all its internal levers and bellows to announce noon time by flapping its wings, moving its head, opening its beak and crowing three times.
