Automation on the farm has revolutionized our production of food. In 1870 it took 47% of the US workforce to grow our foodstuffs. By 1970, the farm population had shrunk to 4% of the total. Since 1970 farming has outstripped manufacturing in productivity gain so that by the mid- 1980s our food was being produced by a mere 3% of our workforce - and they were creating unwieldy surpluses at that.
