Riassunto
Con il libro bianco The Health of the Nation (1993) il governo britannico individuò nell’area della salute mentale un settore prioritario di intervento. In tale documento furono definiti alcuni obiettivi specifici per i servizi di salute mentale. Tra questi, “il miglioramento del livello di salute mentale e di funzionamento sociale delle persone affette da disturbi mentali” spiccava per la sua rilevanza. La Research Unit del Royal College of Psychiatrists (CRU) ricevette quindi l’incarico di sviluppare uno strumento per valutare in che misura questi obiettivi fossero stati raggiunti. Questo strumento doveva essere destinato a un utilizzo abituale e continuativo nei servizi di salute mentale. Avrebbe quindi dovuto essere breve, semplice, facile da usare, accettabile e utilizzabile da ogni figura professionale, in setting terapeutici diversi e su scala nazionale. Il gruppo di lavoro della CRU coordinato da John Wing giunse quindi alla realizzazione e alla messa a punto della scala di valutazione denominata Health of the Nation Outcome Scales (HoNOS) (Wing et al., 1998).
