Some Problems of the Upper Atmosphere

Abstract

An account is given of current views on the origin of the F layer of the ionosphere. The processes leading to recombination are considered. Attention is directed to apparent discrepancies between certain upper atmospheric and laboratory measurements. The equilibrium of the hydrogen and helium ions in the upper part of the thermosphere and the exosphere is briefly discussed. A mechanism by which helium may escape to interplanetary space is described.

Sur quelques problèmes des couches supérieures de l’atmosphère. On donne un aperçu des conceptions courantes de l’origine de la couche F de l’ionosphère et l’on considère les processus conduisant à. la recombinaison. L’attention est portée sur les désaccords apparents entre certaines mesures effectuées dans l’atmosphère supérieure et en laboratoire. L’équilibre des ions hydrogène et hélium dans les couches supérieures de la thermosphère et de l’exosphère est rapidement examiné. On décrit un mécanisme par lequel l’helium peut s’échapper vers l’éspace interplanétaire.
