The sailplane as a tool for boundary layer research

  • August Raspet

Summary

The application of the sailplane to boundary layer research is illustrated with a view toward showing the advantages of the sailplane over the more expensive wind tunnels. The sailplane offers the pure environment dictated by boundary layer theory. Several examples of boundary layer research with the sailplane are given. In particular, the process of laminar boundary layer stabilization and turbulent boundary layer separation prevention are treated with the Prandtl form of the boundary layer momentum equation. The various special instruments needed for boundary layer research with the sailplane are described.
