Abstract

We have been concerned with a number of specific problems relating to research planning in individual companies, which ultimately should lead to a rational choice of a research program. In this context “research and development” is to be seen in the wider scope of long-range company planning. If a company intends to grow in future, this can only be achieved by bridging the gap between the product range of the present, the available production factors, and future needs. (Compare the schematic representation of the relationships in Fig. 4.1). With an agressive company policy the essential characteristics for long-range company growth and survival are given by accurate forecasts and by bridging the above gap completely (1). An agressive policy does not reject on principle company research for bridging the above gap.
