Rewarding Rightholders

The objective of rewarding rightholders for the results of their creative labor can be seen as related to the incentive objective discussed above in Chap.  8, especially if one assumes a causal link between monetary incentives and the creation of new-subject matter. However, while the incentive objective contemplates rewards for rightholders only as a means for achieving the primary purpose, i.e. the creation of new works, the reward objective regards such rewards as an end in themselves, based primarily on the considerations of justice and on the moral obligation to pay the creator, whether or not this induces him or her to engage in creative activity.
