Rotator Cuff Isometric Strength Across the Life Span in Normal Population and in Patients with Rotator Cuff Pathology
The large-scale data on isometric force buildup by rotator cuff muscles (supraspinatus, infraspinatus, and subscapularis) shows variations through the life span. The values are gender and age specific, i.e., maximal in the fifth live decade in men and in the fourth live decade in women.
A clear and significant resolution between the torque-time profiles in shoulders with intrinsic and extrinsic supraspinatus muscle pathology can be detected and distinguished from the values in the normal population.
Therefore, the measurements of the isometric force of the rotator cuff muscles might be utilized as a simple mechanical diagnostic method for identification of the abnormal patterns of muscle isometric strength in patients with different rotator cuff pathologies.
