Hydrohalic acid anion interaction with gold surfaces: Au(110) – bromide

Abstract

In this chapter the experimental results on adsorption of bromide ion on Au(110) surface is described.

In 0.05 M KClO4 + 0.01 M KBr solution between −0.4 V and −0.2 V (SCE), the Au (110) reconstruction is lifted, and at 0.15–0.02 V (SCE), ordered Br layers are found, namely, a (3 × 1) (θBr = 0.66 ML) and a (4 × 1) (θBr = 0.75 ML). Instead of the latter, a quasi-hexagonal structure of the same coverage has also been observed. At positive potentials Au-halide complexes are formed such as AuBr2 [1, 2].
