Abstract

Outline of the theory and the experimental method The second-order fluid model having the equation of state
$$ P_{ik} = - pg_{ik} + \alpha _0 A_{im}^{\left( 1 \right)} A_k^{\left( 1 \right)m} + \alpha _2 A_{ik}^{\left( 2 \right)} $$
in the usual notation, is normally considered adequate for describing the rheological behaviour of dilute polymer solutions. However, normal stress differences associated with the α i are too small to be measured and Graebel (1961) suggested that experiments on Taylor stability would yield information from which the α i could be evaluated.
