Abstract

The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibilities in general gives information on the existence and the magnitude of free magnetic moments, μ, as was studied in the first phase of magnetic research. It also gives at low temperatures in many cases more detailed information on the surroundings of the magnetic ions as their interaction with the neighbours influences the structure of the lowest energy levels. Especially after the second world war, this subject has been intensively studied and special methods were discovered and developed in order to get more knowledge of these details.
