Abstract

Some interesting field-related differences between the performing and nonperforming artists do emerge. In contrast to the performing artists, the painters or sculptors interviewed did not seem to be striving for ever higher levels of accomplishment or for an ultimate goal. Rather, they expressed the desire to continue to do just what they had been doing. Instead of vertical movement toward a peak, one gets the impression of an even, horizontal expansion.
