A New Vision
In the few hundred interviews that I conducted in preparation for writing this book, I have encountered some ambivalence and an overwhelming amount of apprehension about death; but hardly a case of total equanimity—let alone joy—at the thought of one’s mortality. The prospect of death has indeed a tremendous effect on all creative endeavor. At one extreme, it acts as the great motivator, the very source of all achievement; at the other extreme, it inhibits all self-actualizing activity.
