Engineering consists of acquiring and manipulating knowledge so that it may be used productively. Knowledge-based software does the same and therefore has the potential for automating more of the engi neeri ng process. To fulfill its potenti al, such software must be generally useful yet adaptable to particular circumstances, and must meet high standards of integrity. If it does so, it will enable engineering knowledge to be represented in readily accessible, reproducible and marketable forms and knowledge bases will replace software packages and raw machine cycles as the prime commodity for engineering computing.
