Application of Artificial Intelligence in Structural Optimization

Abstract

Mathematical programming as a method of solution of design problems is still struggling for full recognition in structural design. The main obstacle against the wider application of mathematical pro¬gramming methods /MPM/ is that even medium-sized, idealized examples of structural design require vast computer resources while real-life industrial structures are very difficult to calculate in reasonable time. On the other hand quite satisfactory solutions /with respect to the adopted criterion/ can be given by experienced designers using their knowledge and intuition only.
