Plant viruses: Quantitative assay methods and fine structure of the characteristic particles

Abstract

In 1956, Gierer and Schramm (1) and Fraenkel-Conrat (2) independantly and by different procedures isolated from purified tobacco mosaic virus a ribonucleic acid fraction capable of initiating the characteristic disease in susceptible hosts. This was a fundamental advancement in our knowledge of viruses, and has resulted in a greatly increased interest in the fine structure of these pathogens.
