Ordering in lamellar systems

  • J. D. Robertson

An analysis was given of the fine structure of the characteristic cellular membrane, as exemplified by the limiting envelope of typical tissue cells of vertebrates and invertebrates as well as by the cytoplasmic organelles of lamellar structure. An interpretation was given of the molecular organization of such membranes in terms of lipid and non-lipid constituents. The various types of membrane interaction and morphogenesis resulting from this specific molecular organization were illustrated by the case of myelination of nerve fibers (see page 159, this volume).
