Observation of metals at high temperatures by the Field Emission Microscope

Abstract

At high temperature, the field emission pattern of metal or oxide may be observed even by using ordinary vacuum with a pumping system, because a decrease in contamination is to be expected, though the resolution of the pattern may be lowered. Especially, some knowledge of the physical properties of the point cathode at high temperatures may be important when using it in a high resoution electron microscope. It was from these points of view that the following experiment was performed.
