Abstract

A brief historical account of the wave—particle dualism is followed by a discussion of the interaction between light and atoms. The laser principle is represented by means of models and the properties of laser light are compared with those of ordinary light. The unusual properties of laser light allow for a number of important applications. We discuss the transformation of red into blue light, molecular excitations in the stimulated Raman effect, self-induced transparency and ultrashort pulses. Some medical applications are indicated.
