Abstract

Since 2010 Pierburg has been involved in development, application and production of mechanical, fully variable valve actuation (VVA) systems. UpValve, UniValve und FlexValve are recognized upgrades for SI- as well as for Diesel engines. This paper reports on the first launch of a gasoline engine with the UpValve VVA System on the intake side.

After a brief introduction to the VVA system architecture and operation principle, the specific application to the target engine is presented, emphasizing the cylinder head design and constrains, the intrinsic cylinder deactivation (CDA) functionality and the control system structure. Subsequently, engine dyno results in terms of full load performance and part load efficiency are shared.

Finally, an insight into the mass production strategy is given. The production process of the UpValve rocker, including machining, assembly and testing, is explained in more detail.
