Analyzing conditions for media accountability in Latin America: Updating the model

Abstract

In the previous chapters, a variety of aspects influencing the emergence of media accountability instruments in the countries under study has been presented and assigned to either the professional, the public, the political, or the market accountability frame. These underlying conditions mirror the theoretical argument on which this study focuses: Considering carefully the characteristics of the countries under study – in this case beyond the Global North – is of crucial value for a closer understanding of the relationship between the media and accountability. Which of these characteristics are suitable to take into account relates to the nature of democracy and to media systems.
